Tinubu Declares National Mourning for Buhari — Flags to Fly at Half Mast

In a solemn announcement that has touched the heart of Nigeria, President Bola Tinubu has confirmed the passing of his predecessor, former President Muhammadu Buhari. Buhari died peacefully on Sunday at approximately 4:30 pm in London after a prolonged illness, leaving behind a legacy that shaped the course of Nigerian history.

According to an official statement from presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu personally reached out to Aisha Buhari, the widow of the late leader, offering his deepest condolences during this difficult time. In a show of solidarity and respect, the President has directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to travel to the United Kingdom to accompany Buhari’s remains back home, ensuring a dignified return for the revered statesman.

As a mark of national mourning and respect, President Tinubu has ordered that flags across Nigeria be flown at half-mast, symbolizing the profound loss felt by the entire nation.

Muhammadu Buhari’s political and military career was marked by historic milestones. He served as Nigeria’s military head of state from January 1984 to August 1985 before being democratically elected twice as president—in 2015 and again in 2023. His leadership was characterized by efforts to tackle corruption, improve security, and strengthen Nigeria’s presence on the global stage.

Earlier, the Buhari family shared the heartbreaking news of the former president’s passing through a statement by his longtime spokesperson, Mallam Garba Shehu. The statement read in part:
“INNA LILLAHI WA INNA ILAIHIRRAJIUUN.
The family of the former president has announced the passing of Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London. May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus, Amin.”

As Nigeria reflects on the life and legacy of Muhammadu Buhari, the nation unites in prayer and remembrance of a man who dedicated decades to public service. His passing marks the end of an era, but his influence will continue to resonate for years to come.
