The Crown Meets the Queen of Pop: Kate and William’s Rihanna Outing Uncovered

Kate Middleton and Prince William are Rihanna fans!

Former BBC Radio 1 DJ Scott Mills revealed in a recent interview that the royal couple secretly attended the BBC Radio 1 Big Weekend festival back in May 2010, just a few months before announcing their royal engagement.

“I remember them turning up to Radio 1’s Big Weekend years ago… the bosses knew, but the rest of us had no idea for obvious security reasons,” Mills told Heat magazine.

“It was kept quiet, but they were watching Rihanna at the side of the stage,” he shared. “I like it that they got involved.”

In addition to Rihanna, that year’s Big Weekend — which was held that year in Bangor, North Wales — also featured Kesha, Justin Bieber, Florence & The Machine, Alicia Keys, Lostprophets, 30 Seconds to Mars and more on the main stage.

It was likely one of the last low-profile outings for the couple, who met at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland and were friends for over a year before they began dating.

“It just sort of blossomed from then on,” William said in their engagement interview. “[We] realized we shared the same interests. [We] just had a really good time.”

After over a decade together, William and Kate shared the news of their engagement in November 2010 and tied the knot on April 29, 2011. They now share three children: Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, 7.

The Prince and Princess of Wales have continued to have concert nights, including last summer when William brought George and Charlotte to Taylor Swift‘s Eras Tour in London. Prince William showed off his dance moves to “Shake It Off,” then the trio posed for a selfie with the pop star.
