Andy Murray Takes on His Toughest Opponent Yet — And It’s Not on the Court

Andy Murray Gets Schooled at Home — By His 5-Year-Old Son
Put Andy Murray on a tennis court, and the three-time Grand Slam champion is in complete control. But when it comes to chess? The checkmate isn’t always his.
In a recent interview with BBC Sport, the newly retired British tennis star revealed that chess has become a big part of family life — thanks to his young son.
“My 5-year-old boy has gotten massively into chess,” Murray shared. “I’m not a particularly good chess player, but I’ve got quite an analytical mind. I enjoy the game and watching him learn.”
You’d think Murray’s experience, logic, and competitive drive would give him the edge — especially against someone in kindergarten. But the reality? His son is giving him more than a run for his money.
“He’s going to the toilet in the middle of the game, and then he comes back and is beating me at chess,” Murray laughed.
And then came the kicker:
“It’s difficult losing to a 5-year-old when, in the middle of the game, he’s asking you to come and wipe his bum. It’s humbling for my intelligence.”
Whether it’s Grand Slam glory or domestic defeat on the chessboard, Murray is taking it all in stride — with a good dose of humor and a healthy dose of parental pride.
